The Flax Industry.
In 1899 a bonus of £1760 wag offered by the Government for an improvement in the machinery or process now in use which. would materially reduce the cost of production of flax, improve the product, or . increase the quantity of dressed fibre. T|iat offer has now been withdrawn, but Sir William Russell urged on Tuesday that it should be extended to 81st March, 1906. The value of the flax industry Ta now, ho pointed out, about £200,000 a year, and if it was possible to increase it by ten or twenty per, cent, iii would be an excellent thing for the colony. The Minister for Agriculture promised to bring the matter before Cabinet when the Supplementary Estimates were being Considered. —Post.
