The opening'of the newly erected Defiance Creamery at Oroua Bridge has been postponed until to-day. The creamery will start with a guarantee of over 400 .cows. Near the Abbey, on Coronation day the Fijians in petticoats, were the centre of much interest, and Red Indian chiefs, in native costumes, feathers and blankets, decorated with customary mirrors, caused most lively amusement. The Australian sire San Fran, by Gozo—Procella, has been purchased on behalf of Mr W. J. Douglas, of Te Mahanga, Hawke's Bay. It is expected that the Public Works Statement will be brought down about Friday, and the debate will take place next week. "Barclay that the Government should have inquiry made into the hours of woric and rates of pay in banks in New Zealand, the Hon. W. Hall-Jones stated that last session the bank clerks had intimated that they were satisfied with the existing ■ conditions, and accordingly (be Government saw no necessity for an inquiry. A great clearing sale is now on at the Centre of Commerce, and which will continue until the 17th inst. As the proprietor is contemplating great changes very soon, he has decided to sell off drapery, clothing, &c., regardless of cost, as the goods must he sold. The proprietor will be glad to see visitors from other towns, and also trusts the Foxton people will avail themselves of this golden opportunity. By some extraordinary omission or muddlement on the part of some one —jet us say, cur reporter—the list published in our last Saturday’s issue of officers,elected at the annual meeting of the Foxton Lawn Tennis Chib was both defective and misleading. In reply to a question in the House as to supplying volunteers with overcoats, the Acting-Defence Minister said that' there were a certain number of overcoats in stock, which could be purchased but to supply the whole of the Volunteers with overcoats would cost £33,000. Russia is planning a great strategic railway through Persia to India. The line starts at Khanikin, in Asiatic Turkey on the river Diyala, close to the Persian frontier, and passes Kennanshah and Ispahan to Kirman, thence through Baluchistan. A branch line is projected from Kerman to Bund a Abbas, on the Persian Gulf. The death of Mr F. J, Stuckey is announced. He died last Sunday morning at the age of 57. It was in tin; year 1889 he settled in Levin and remained there since. Mr G. H, Stiles announces to-day in his replace advertisement that he will open during the next few days his spring and summer goods. In the Millinery Department orders will be executed that will give complete satisfaction. An inspection of the goods is invited.
