Attempted Swindle in Queensland.
A civil action brought by one Campbell against the Railways Commissioner claiming £IO,OOO damages for injuries suffered through falling out of a train has had a somewhat sensational ending. The Judge, in summing up, said there had undoubtedly been an audacious conspiracy to defraud the State. The Attorney-General said he had evidence which would show beyond doubt that a person named Henderson who was to have given evidence on behalf of the plaintiff—but who had disappeared—had obtained £615 from the West Australian Government on a claim made by him, and had also got £3OO or £4OO from the South Australian Government for falling out of a train.
Jngdment was entered for the Commissioner, and his Honor convicted Campbellfor perjury.
