Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 1902. The Railway Station.

The fire that destroyed the railway station on Tuesday night is one that might have been a great deal worse. The building was a very old one with patches added to it and was extremely dangerously close to the rails. That it has gone is not to be regretted. We trust the Mayor and Council will interest themselves as to the building to be erected in its stead, as the town, as well as the business done,

demands more suitable promises. The station wants placing, not far away from its present site, but far enough to give a better approach to it, as well as giving more room on the platform. This can only be done by encroaching on Harbour street, but this has been practically sanctioned by the Council a month or two ago when other improvements were mooted. We have every belief that the Council will do all they can to meet the Engineer in securing both a better site and a better grade for the approaches, and it seems to us that whilst carrying-out these alterations there would be enough soil to spare to use for the filling needed for another line at the end of the railway above the wharf, thus securing the needed loop pointed out as so much required to the Hon. the Minister of Railways on his last visit here. Whatever is wanted should be made known to the Railway Department as the works may be all fitted into one another and thus secure a satisfactory completion of the improvements.
