Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1902. Poultry.
The exhibition of poultry at Palmerston was both interesting and instructive and brings the industry very forcibly before the public. The Government has, for the past few years, done much to: interest settlers in the country and their efforts are now commencing to bear fruit. The Show was that of birds bred here, there, and everywhere but it was -pleasing to note that breeders, at Foxton and Palmerston secured their full share of prizes. , . To residents around this township the rearing of poultry deserves very earnest consideration, as there is money in it which will surprise them. We are very credibly informed that by the proper crossing of birds wonderful results will be secured, and instead of having fowls running about worth, at the outside, one shilling a head, the oookerells, and pullets, at six months of age may be reckoned as worth three shillings each! surely a valuable addition to the income of anyone. To secure this result common sense and* fair feeding must be given to the rearing and feeding of the birds. We have been creditably informed that a lady at Shannon sent down a orate of coekrels to the Fresh Food Company and got, free of all expenses, three shillings and sixpence per head. The country in this district is preeminently suited for poultry rearing, being dry, and here many breeds could be satisfactorily kept which could not be in Palmerston, a fact admitted by the President of the Association. Wo should like to see true interest being taken and an association, or a
branch of the Manawatu one, formed here. We feel sure it would be to the advantage of every settler.
