Imperial Conference.

The Imperial Conference has resumed its sitting, Mr Chamberlain presiding. Amongst those present were—Lord Onslow, Sir M. P. Ommanney, Mr Gerald Balfour, Lord Dudley, the Hon. W. T. Fielding, the Hon. W. Paterson, Mr Llewellyn Smith, Sir Francis Hopwood. Mc T. W. Holderness (Secretary of Commerce, India Office), and Sir George Giffen.

Various phases of oommeroial relations were considered, but no decision was arrived at.

Sub-committees were appointed to investigate, in co-operation with the Board of Trade, bow preferential trade concessions would affect Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The question of shipping subsidies was discussed from the double standpoint of securing economical freight and combating the policy of foreign Governments which subsidise vessels.

The question was finally deferred until another sitting. - The. conference resumes deliberations on Friday, when it will discuss Imperial defence. Sir Edmund Barton, Sir John Forrest and Mr Seddon wiir on Thursday further discuss with Lord Belborne the Admiralty’s modified scheme. Bit Wilfrid Laurier and the Canadian State Premiers have conferred with Mr Gerald Balfour relative to an Imperial subsidy for a fast Atlantis wrrieti
