Admiral Bir Lewis Beaumont, in an interview, said—We cannot afford to wait till Australia is rich enough to create a naval defence force, and has men enough and opportunities of training them. We must obtain protection in some other way, and the only other way he knew was to increase the contribution to the Imperial Navy, so as to have larger and more modern ships.

The present local naval force, he says, is out of date.
