Railway Notes.

The total earnings of the railway for the financial year were £1,874,586, and the working expenditure £1,252,287, leaving a net profit of £622,819. The mileage traffic has increased from 2,212 miles to 2,235 miles, and. the capital cost £18,170,722. The net revenue is equal to a return of 8.43 per cent. The number of train miles run are 5,066,360, being an increase of 445,889 over the previous year. The passenger traffic shows an increase of 1,112,548 with an increase of revenue of £72,646. The average number of men em ployed was 8,813 against 7,793 for the previous year. 7,856,186 ordinary passengers, and 100,778 season ticket holders, travelled during the year. 85,950 school excursionists were carried as well as 684,441 passengers at holiday-excursion fares. The visit of the Duke and Duchess of York created a traffic to Auckland of 18,128 passengers, to Rotorua 4,015, to New Plymouth 1,568, to Wellington 27,264, to Christchurch 84,825, to Ashburton 266, to Timaru 769, and to Dunedin 27,201. THE FOXTON RAILWAY STATION. From the Railway Statement we take tbs following particulars of traffic at the Foxton Railway Station for the year ending 31st March, 1902. The station is opened 18 hours daily, and there are five hands employed. OUTWARDS. There were 13,952 tickets sold being 897 single first-class, 682 return first-class, 4,757 single secondclass and 8,116 return second-class. There were also 79 season tickets sold. 917 parcels were carried, 8 drays, 183 trucks of lime, chaff, &c., 1982 bales of wool, 756 tons grain, 2541 tons of merchandise, and 4191 tons of minerals. In animals, 29 horses, 55 dogs, 61 head of cattle, 1468 sheep, were sent away. Thera were also 80 trucks of firewood, and 35,300 feet of timber despatched. The total value forwarded amounted to £6,281 16s sd. INWARDS. There were received 1681 parcels,

85 horses, 10 carriages, 182 dogs, 13 drays, 368 trucks of lime 140 bead of cattle, 8880 sheep, 108 pigs, 0,177 bales of wool, 102 trucks of firewood, 576,000 feet of timber, 889 tons of grain, 1144 tons .of- merchandise, and 2864 tons of minerals.
