Buller’s Campaign in Natal.
At the instance of General Sir Redvers Boiler, the newspapers publish the full text of the Colenso despatches, supplied by order of Mr firodriek, Secretary of State for War. Nearly all the newspapers say that the despatches show . that General Duller was bewildered and demoralised at Colenso, and they declare that the text places the famous heliograph messages in a worse light than ever. It shows that on 15th December, General Duller informed the Marquis of Lansdowne, then Secretary for War, that he considered he ought to let Ladysmith go. On the 16th, Lord Lansdowne urged the General to make another attempt to relieve the town, urging that its abandonment would be a national disaster of the greatest magnitude. On the 16th and 17th, General Duller counselled Sir George White to surrender on the best terms available. Sir George replied on the 16th that he could not yet think of surrender, adding that the loss of twelve thousand men would be a heavy blow to England. General Duller might, he considered, possibly hit the enemy harder. He imagined that the attacking force ought to keep in touch with the enemy. General Duller writes to the newspapers, stating—“ I was delighted to receive on 17th December Lord Lansdowhe’s assurance that forces 1 % 1 f I Auiil/ J* I ! "’ll * r (S J
