Education in Britain.
The debate on the Secondary Education Bill was continued in the House of Commons last night. Mr Balfour, leader of the House, accepted an amendment prohibiting the teaching of the catechism or other distinctive formulary in v sehools, colleges, or similar institutions provided by public funds. Lord Hugh Cecil and Lord Percy protested against the concession, the former criticising Mr Balfour’s conduct in regard to the Bill. The House by 181 votes to 165 negatived an amendment to the effect th(it no teacher should be compelled, as a condition of employment, to declare his religious belief.
