Another Kitchener Story.
Aq officer, speaking at the If Battery smoke concert at Lyttelton on Wednesday night, told a story of Lord Kitchener, which he said, had never appeared in print, and for the truth of which he could vouch, as a near relative of his own was concerned with it. In effect it was this. His relative was an officer in an Australian corps serving in South Africa, and on one occasion had the ' duty of conducting a convoy. ®arii of the journey, and the Australian had as much as he do to make them “ move on.” Seeing an officer standing near with a whip in hia hand, he went up to him saying, “ Give me this d— —d whip,” and took it. By dint of vigorously applying it to the mules ho at last got the animals satisfactorily under way, and went to return the whip, with thank#, to its owner. The latter, who wore no badges of rank, said, “ What j regiment do you belong to?” i “Queensland Imperial Bushman, sir,” was the reply. “ I thought you were an Australian. Do you know j who lam?” “No, sir, but I think you look something like the portrait] of Lord Kitchener.” “ Yes,” replied the officer, “I’m Kitchener.” The Australian saluted, said something about being very much obliged for the use of the whip, and turned to look after his convoy. Lord Kitchener quietly remarked to an aide, “ I like that.” J
