At,the adjourned meeting of the Manawatu Licensing Committee re* newals and transfers were granted in all cases. The application for a hotel at Rongotea occupied the whole day, the committee was unanimously of opinion that a hotel was not required. The police complain that the difficulties of hunting the Kenniff brothers, who are wanted on the charge of murdering Constable Doyle and Mr Dahlke, are largely increased through settlers supplying the fugitives with necessaries and information.

The Agricultural Department is satisfied that an improvement in the quality of a good deal of the flax which has been got ready for export lately has been brought about through the bringing into operation of the Act requiring that all hemp shall be graded by a Government expert before it is sent out of the colony. The Department is not authorised to reject any flax unless it is absolutely worthless but it has power to grade any of the fibre so low as to make its export unprofitable to the shipper.

The Tammany Hall chiefs are repudiating "Boss” Croker, They state that Croker’s best quality was truthfulness, and they take him at his word when he said that he would never again be the Tammany leader. For the position of Town Clerk at Marton 18 applications were received. Mr R. J. Gibson, Wellington, was appointed. Mr Gibson was a solicitor before the Supreme Court, Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to the colony about 8 months ago. He has a considerable knowledge of Municipal work and for some years was actively engaged as town representative of several Borough Councils. He is at present engaged in the Town Clerk’s office at Wellington. Mr Gibson is 40 years of age. The exhibition of the cinematograph pictures showing the operation recently performed on the Hindoo twins, Radica and Doodica, has awakened a storm of disgust in Vienna. The pictures show all the horrors of the dissecting room, and the dreadful contortions of the limbs when under the knife.
