Flax.
Mr Chas. J. Fulton, hemp-grader in Wellington to the Department of Agriculture, is issuing a circular in the following terms to flax-millers and others interested“ Suggestions as to preparation of hemp for export—The principal faults to be avoided are: — Hemp.—(a) Insufficient stripping or over-stripping, causing in the one case strawy and in the other broken fibre; (b) insufficient care in cleansing and fielding, thus affecting the strength and appearance; (c) bad scutching: (d) want of classing prior to baling, inferior fibre often being mixed with good; (e) carelessness in baling and neglect to see bales kept clean: (f) neglect to clearly and distinctly brand and number each bale. Tow-—(a) Neglect to thoroughly shake the tow before baling, so as to get rid of the dust : (b) the packing of damp and sometimes rotten tow, field bands, and dried leaves with good tow; (0) untidy packing (the tow should be placed in the press,in rolls with the ends neatly turned in); (e) neglect to clearly and distinctly brand and number the hales.”
