AUSTIN’S MILL v. KING & BAKER’S.
One of the best and most interesting games for some time past was played, on the racecourse on Saturday afternoon between teams picked from the employees of the above mills. The match was played for a dinner, which the losing team was to provide. The game resulted in a win for King & Baker’s mill by 8 points to 6. There were a great number of supporters of both sides present, who barracked until they were hoarse for their respective teams, which made every player use utmost energy to gain the day. Austin’s team kicked off, and, the game was set at a merry pace by the forwards, and after several forward rushes McDonold scored for Austin’s. The kick at goal was not a successful one and the score stood, Austin’s 3, K. & B. 0. There was no further score when half-time was sounded. P. Glover kicked off for K. & B’s. in the second spell, and lifter a lot of loose forward rushes and the determined play by the K. & B. men, Martin scored. The kick at goal was taken by Newton, who converted it, the score being K. & B. 5, Austin’s 3. From the kick out the ball was sent backwards and forwards for some time, till McDonald, backed up well by Dud son, nearly scored in the corner, but the ball going out of touch spoiled their chance. From the throw in Rout smartly got possession and falling over the line scored for Austin’s. The kick at goal was not a success.* Austin’s 6, K. & B’s. 5. The K. & B’s. rallied once more, and after a few scrums and some hard kicking had been indulged in, P. Glover got possession and making a determined run scored amidst applause. The kick resulted in a failure, and the whistle sounding time shortly after, left K. & B’s. winners by 8 points to 6. It was hard to particularise the players owing to both teams playing in mixed jerseys. The game had to be atoffefl wend .timSQTOgA.toJ

THE DINNER.
In the evening the dinner was partaken of at Host Levett’s Manawatu Hotel, a large number l.eing present. The dinner provided reflected great credit on those who were responsible for its preparation, and it is unnecessary to say that it was much enjoyed. Music and songs after the dinner were indulged in, and several toasts were drank. The gathering before diapersing gave three cheers for Mr and Mrs Levett and the referee.
