Cecil Rhodes’ Will.
Mr Rhodes’s will, dated July Ist, 1899, "with codicils dated January ' 18th, 1902 (the latter relating to family and German bequests) deals •with six millions sterling, including two millions bequeathed to educaBegaiding his final resting-place, the testator declares, “I admire the grandeur and loneliness of the Matoppo Hills, and desire to be buried on the hill I called “View of the ■World.” . He bequeathed £4OOO annually to preserve the grave and transform the hill into a State burial ground of persons deserving well of their country after the federation of South Africa, and to establish a Buluwayo Park. Two thousand annually is bequeathed for an Irrigation Forestry and Agricultural College m Maahonaland. Groote Schuur, Mr Rhodes s house at Rondebosoh, near Capetown, is left as a residence for the Premier of Federated South Africa, with £IOOO per annum for upkeep of horses, carriages and servants. The grounds are in the meantime to be used as a further leaves £IOO,OOO to Oriel College, Oxford. This includes £40,000 for the extension of the college buildings, the remainder beinff for the improvement of the income and comfort of Fellowships and general repairs. The deceased emphasises the importance of the residential system, La confers the following endowaents for colonial scholarships at Oxford, , n Twenty to be filled annually of the yearly value of £BOO, tenable for throe years by mala students—three from Rhodesia.one each from the South African, Stellenbosch, Diocesan, bt. Andrew’s and Grahanistown College Schools; one each from Natal, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, West Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Ontario, New foundland, Quebec, the Bermu-
das, and Jamaica. Two similar scholarships, ope to be filled yearly, to each of the fortyfire States and five territories of the United States of America. Fifteen similar scholarships ox *250 per annum, for German students nominated by the Kaiser in recognition of the promotion of the study of English m Germany. The scholarships are free from air religious or racial test. It ijß provided that in allotting th( scholarships the bases must be 8( points per cent for literary anc scholastic attainments and 30 pei cent for sports. The schoolmates o: the successful candidates are tc ballot up to 20 points for qualities o: manhood, truth and courage. A similar ballot is to be made up to 2C points for qualities of moral force ol character, based upon the report oi the headmaster of the school. The total number of scholarships is 175. The number of scholarships mentioned in the above message will, on the terms mentioned, involve an annual expenditure at the end of three years of £115,350.
