The Kapiti Excursion.
Yesterday the popular regular trader the s.s. Queen of the South, under Captain Manley, ran an excursion trip to Kapiti, which was very largely patronised, over 200 adults and children embarking. The day was everything that could bo desjred, the sea was calm, the weather warm, and under the careful superintendence ot the officers everything went without a hitch. The steamer left the wharf at n o’clock and reached Kapiti at two when the passengers were landed at Rangatira Point. Some hours ware enjoyed on shore, the more robust climbing the steep hills to obtain the fine view therefrom, others kept to the shore and -investigated the varied ferns growing at the bottom of the hills. Many went fishing and secured a number of grand fish, schnapper, teraki, and rock cod. At 6.20 p.m. all having returned on board a start was made lor home, and after a pleasant run up tha coast on a sea as smooth as glass, the bar was reached at 10.20, the moon being full and bright. In Jhe river everything changed, almost suddenly, the beautiful clear warm night turning into a very sharp fog, through which it was exceedingly difficult to feel one’s way. As the captain knows the river so well that he could get along when almost pitch dark, the steamer was safely laid alongside the wharf and the excursionists safely landed. Everyone exprass-ed themselves exceedingly pleased with the trip.
