Great Fire in Sydney.
Her Majesty’s Theatre in Sydney leased by Mr J. C. Williamson, has been destroyed by fire. Excepting the Pitt street frontage, consisting of the vestibule and Her Majesty’s and George Hotels flanking each corner, the place is a complete wreck. The whole body of the theatre is gutted from end to end, and only the bare walls are standing. The last scene in "Ben Hur" is “ Palm Sunday on the Mount of Olives," and on Palm Sunday the destruction of the theatre occurred. ; Mir Williamson was uninsured. The cost of staging the piece was £ 6OOO. The season, so far as Australia is concerned, has thus terminated. It will take a yeat to replace all the properties, many of which had to be imported. It is estimated that Mr Williamson loses quite £15,000 through being deprived of the use of the theatre. ; The origin of the fire is a mystery. It was in no. way connected with the fumigation process.' .
