The Volunteer Concert.

The entertainment on behalf of th.e local volunteer corps took place at the Public Hall last night, but the attendance fell far short to what it should have been. The performance commenced with an overture by Miss Mack, and then a tableau “ Dear Mother England ” with song and chorus, was given, which may be considered the best of the evening. Mr Levett sang " The Arab’s Farewell to His Steed,” and Mrs Currie contributed “.As Your Hair Grows Whiter.” Mr Jack was encored for his dance (sailor’s hornpipe), and also later in the evening was recalled for dancing the Scotch reel. Miss Haywood was successful in her rendition of “ Fiona,” and had to return. Mr Byles was also recalled for his song “ Anchored.” This singer also contributed another song in the second part. Mr T. Betty played a euphonium solo, and Mr J. Cook received an encore for his song "The Boers have got my Daddy,” and this performer was also encored for his comic song which he contributed later. A tableau concluded the first part entitled " Two Strings to His Bow.” As an opening to the second portion Miss Haywood played an overture, and the tableau “ Girls of the Modem Period ” was next staged, and Mr A. James deserved his encore for “ Queen of the Angels,” this gentleman’s songs being among the best of the evening. Miss Hamer had also to return for her song, “ Look Back,” and contributed “ The Valley by the Sea,” Mrs Currie sang “Killarney,” and the tableau “ Cinderella ” concluded the programme. Just before the last item Captain Hunter went on the stage and said he desired, on behalf of the corps, to thank .the public for their attendance and he also thanked Sergeant Hanier and Mrs Hamer for their trouble in arranging the. concert. The debt which the corps was under had been wiped off, and left only a balance of between £3O to £3O remaining, and this amount would be decreased by the success the concert had been. The accompaniments during the evening were played by Misses Fume, Haywood, Hamer and Imrie. The net proceeds of the concert were £5 10s.
