The Ministerial Visit.
The visit of Sir Joseph Ward to this town last week was a very pleasant break to the dreadful monotony of the past months. Everyone who met the Minister was very .pleased with his courtesy and straightforwardness of his replies. In most he was clear and decided, saying either yes or no. The visit was a most fortunate one for the town and much good will probably result from it, especially as the Mayor received the encouraging statement that Sir Joseph was personally in favour of permitting small borough's to borrow on the easy Government terms for road making. If this matter is kept well in front it is possible the coming Session may see the much desired amendment in the Act.
We are glad that the public spirited oolicy of the Racing Club has been the means of setting a good example to the Borough Council. That it was the action of the Club which stirred the Council to activity was stated by the Mayor in informing Sir Joseph that the list of requirements was only prepared at a meeting held the night previous. It is in this instance better late than never, but it emphasises onr frequent statement that our local representatives stand in need of much arousing, and it becomes b> question worthy of consideration whether a Ratepayers’ Association is not required to keep the spur constantly pressed against the sides of our public men. It will be our duty to see that the commencement of good works now made does not b come dulled, but that the constant communication with the Government is carried on until the requests made are fulfilled.
