THE TRUTH WILL OUT!

TO THE EDITOR OF THF, 3IANAWATU HERALD. Sir,—l am pleased to notice from your Press Association telegrams Mr Seddon is reported to have at length acknowledged that “ ha believes he is becoming a Conservative in his old age,” but unfortunately still desires to concoal the fact by adding, i.e., “ so far as true liberalism is concerned and the interests of his country.” Now, Sir, what is a Conservative but a true liberal minded man to all alike, and who has the interests of his country at heart, as distinguished from the democratic bomb " desirous of bursting up everything held dear to a man’s heart and sacred to the eyes of the world ? to say nothing of the place-hunter and seeker after the loaves and fishes! And so, after these years of bombastic legislation, rushing in where “angels fear to tread” in his endeavour to grasp the hearts of the people in order to gain popularity by upsetting all good old well tried customs—that which far, wiser aqd more cautious men have known for centuries would please the masses, five a phillip for the time hang to aay country, and enable a Government to retain its hold of the reins for a longer period than they otherwise would, but as surely would burst at last, and expose its hollowness to view, leaving the population, rich and poor, in a far worse state than the first, and taking years of careful conservative policy and legislation to retrieve its former position 1 This, Sir, I maintain is what is gradually coming to light before the hitherto blinded vision of New Zealand’s working man, and which Richard Seddon had in view when he gave vent to his feelings with those ominous words of conviction, and it is to be hoped, Sir, that ere the next election his example will be upheld by the community, and that we shall again find ourselves a Conservative people ready and determined to resist these childish attempts to upset time-honoured constitutions. —I am, &c., Robert Cobb. Manakau, Feb. 20th, 1902.
