Burglary.

It is not often, with the police protection we have, that any breakinginfco occurs, but on Saturday night last, or in the early morn of Sunday, some one entered the premises of Messrs Thomas Westwood & Co., and removed the whole of his stock of jewellery valued at nearly MlO. The watchmaker, a few doors off, also reports that his premises were entered and some valuables removed. Messrs Westwood & Co. report that on Saturday night they left the premises all safe and properly fastened. On Sunday afternoon a neighbour, Mr East, went to his private house and told him he feared his shop had been broken into as his son had found some small articles at the back of the hall which very much resembled those in the shop. Mr Westwood went hastily to the shop with Mr East and found the back door closed, but which opened on turning the handle, when it was seen that the catch had been forced open and broken. , On examining the interior it was seen that the cases had been almost cleared of their contents, but as one or two small ladies’ watches/ were left, it was evident that ihe clearance bad been made in the dark and from the back of the cases, as these watches were. not visible from the back and were small and thus possibly missed. Not content with this haul the thief went round the shop to the other side of the counter and cleared a case of silver-mounted pipes.

The police have the matter in hand and we trust so in to hear of the apprehension of the thief.
