Volunteer Notes.
The Foxton Rifles mustered close on 40 strong under Captain Hunter on Thursday evening last, wheirthay were put through some useful drill by the Captain and non-coms. Before the men were dismissed Captain Hunter informed them that owing to his leaving the district) ha would bo resigning his position as Captain at tbs of February.,
&||bssefl regret at having to do so as ha had been associated with the corps since its formation. After drill an election was held for a second lieutenant (owing to the resigning of that position by Lieut. Stausell), when two candidates were proposed Sergeant Hamer and Lance-Corporal Baker —which resulted in the election of the last hdnie'di The new officer briefly thanked the men for the position to which they bad placed him, and would do his best to keep their confidence. Sergeant Hamer also thanked those who vdte'd for him; The corps go into caihp for their annual week's training from the 19th to 26th February, and it is necessary that ©very man does so so as to earn capitation; , The shootihg mated, which was to have taken place between teams from the Palmerston Guards and the local corps on the 12th ; has been postponed to the 19th.
