The Transvaal.
A SMALL FORCE OVERWHELMED. A hundred and fifty Boers surprised twenty-five Yeomanry who were acting as escort to thirty-five natives engaged In grass-cutting at Lindiquespruit. A gallant resistance was offered, but the British were overpowered, and lost one killed and seven wounded-. Four unarmed natives were shot in cold blood. Six Boers were killed and four wounded. BLOCKHOUSES. The blockhouse line has been com* -pitted from Klerksdorp to Ventersdorp, and thence to Zeerust It will be continued to Mafeking. TERMS OF PEACE. Mr Kruger, in a note to the Dutch press, in reply to Mr Chamberlain, says the Boer leaders claim complete independence, and that without granting it negotiations are hopeless. Mr Balfour, speaking in the House of Commons, said no peace proposals had reached the Government since July from anyone able to speak on behalf of the Boer leaders. THE LATE SCHEEPERS. Mr Brodrick, Secretary of State for War, stated. in the House of Commons that Commandant Scheopers was executed for seven cold-bleoded murders of natives and for flogging a whitemau. DEATH OF A NEW ZEALANDER. Private H. Collins, of the New Zealand Mounted Infantry, died of enteric at Heilbron. [Collins was a member of the Seventh Contingent, and belonged to Canvastown, Havelock.] FROM BELGIUM. “Le Journal de Bruxelles," the organ of the Belgian Goveinment, says the ungrudging sacrifices made by the British colonies is a striking object lesson of national solidarity. A BURGHER CORPS. Lord Kitchener has authorised General Vilonel to raise a burgher corps fifteen hundred strong. General Vilonel has informed Mr Steyn that this is the outcome of his obstinacy. LORD METHUEN’S COLUMN. Lord Methuen captured at Boschpoort 136 waggons, 19,011 cattle, 28,750 sheep and thirty-five Boer families. CAPTURES. , A hundred and fifty Boers captured a patrol of twelve Yeomanry in the Westers Transvaal after six bad been wounded. Four Boers were killed. Field-Cornet Snyman and five Boers were captured in the Northern Transvaal. MISCELLANEOUS; While some Dragoon Guards were skirmishing near Harrismith 2. Boer boy, aged six, approaching suddenly, drew a revolver and wounded a private mortally. A burgher named Van Scbelvijk and his two sons have each been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and a fine of £SOO for concealing Lorses, ammunition and grain at Nerval's Pont, on the North Cape Colony border. The War Office authorities have declined to assist Lord Hobhouse in taking legal action in regard to the deportation of his niece, Miss Emily Hobhouse, from South Africa. The “Daily Chronicle's" Rome correspondent assserts that Colonel Ricciardi, formerly of the Boer Foreign Legion, is returning to the Transvaal with volunteers for the Boer service. Latest. ALLEGED BOER ATROCITIES. Two Yeomanry assert that Boers during December captured a small convoy at Phillopopolis and murdered eight native drivers, tying several to the wheels of waggons and burning them alive. A SHARP BIGHT. A sharp fight occurred at Trenfontain on the 21st January. Seven were killed and 26 wounded, chiefly Yeomanry. A PROTEST FROM A VIGILANCE COMMITTEE. The Vigilance Committee at the Gape strongly protest against the amnesty of the rebels. NEUTRALITY ABUSED.
