Noxious Weeds.

For soma months past the QeTornmant and the Local Bodies have been busy in fighting Noxious Weeds on paper.. Some day a man will arise who will fight the weed itself. Continually our attention is drawn to Mr So and So having a fine crop of some objectional plant growing fin his property, or having the commencement of a.patch which will be disastrous to himself and neighbours in the sweet by and bye. • Noxious weeds have been having; their day, and have taken every advantage '■of the opportunity given,, and it. is well that war has been declared against them, and better when it is begun. The wont offender appears to be the Californian Thistle, which struggles for life in all ways. Cut it down when in bloom it expands Its roots, out Jits roots it shoots up Wiillabove in stalks and leaves, and when fighting it every care must be taken to sweep up the pieces, as we are informed even a piece of the leaf left on the ground will start a root rather than do nothing. We admire the oare taken not to make this fight too ; hard to the settler by forcing him to clear everything off the land at onee, as this would simply be ruin. However, weed* grow in various and wonderful places, but the very worst place that the Californian Thistle can grow is on the banks of a river. There if it blooms the seed lies on the ground ready for the first flood to carry it upon somebody’s land lower down, and we should expeot that the strictest

will 1m given to all mtr the Inspectors—when they •epn to work. We have been informed of some beautiful patches, fait ripening in somewhat similar | position to the ones wo have stated I our belief to be most dangerous. j.
