The New Inspector of Schools.
At the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board on Tuesday, Mr John Smyth, M.A , N.Z , Dr. Philosophy, Edinburgh, was appointed ( hief Inspector in place of Mr Bindon, resigned. He .is 86 years of age, and trained as a teacher in the North Island. He begaa his teaching career in Southland, New Zealand, in 1882. In 1886-8 he was prizeman in mathematics and science in the Otago University, second in English and political economy, and fourth in Latin. In 1891 he gained his 8.8 degree with honors in menta" science. In February, 1898, he was appointed rector at the Waimate District High School with 500 scholars In 1895 he resigned to pursue his studies in Germany, and returned to the colony in 1897 to conduct Professor Salmond's classes at the Otago University. In 1900 he gained the doctorship of philosophy at Edinborough. In 1900 he spent some time at the University of Jena, Germany, and both in Scotland and Germany he studied the educational systems, and last month he returned to the colony.
