Manawatu County Council.

* I The ordinary monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Present —Crs. J. G. Wilson (chairman), T. Masters. H. Hammond, T. P. Clark, J. R. McLennan and A. Strang. Cr Robinson was granted leave of absence. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., stating he would give Council his assistance in connection with the extension of tramway. The tramway manager reported as follows : — In accordance with your instructions I have prepared a comparative statement of the tramway rates and the Government railway rates up to 25 miles. You will notice there is very little difference in the two rates, except in Class E, grain etc. I have made a reduction of lod per ton in the tramway figures, and would suggest a further reduction of is per ton might be made on grain to Carnarvon. The passenger fares in force are rather high. I have shown the present fares charged and underneath have made out a lower scale, which might be safely adopted. I have also to report that I have applied to the Railway De- j partment for £74 8* 7d due to tramway for period ended November 10th, 1900. The summary of receipts and expenditure of tramway for month of November showed a deficiency of £zo 17s ad. The Council decided, with a view of popularising the tramway, to lower the scale of charges all round as drawn out by the Manager, provided consent of Government be obtained. It was resolved, That tenders be called for metalling Feilding-Halcombe road, to be in by January meeting. That F. Rink's tender be accepted for metalling on Lee's line. That tenders be called, to be in by next meeting, to make 41 chains of drain on Cooper's line, subject to fence being moved as agreed by settlers. It was decided to close the office for holidays from December 22nd to January 2nd. — Advocate.
