PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS. Twelve Scandinavian missionaries and 100 native converts have bean tortured to death at Kwai-hua-Cheng, in the province of Shansi. Further to the westward Boxen and regulars are still besieging mission stations, where priests and coverts am residing. There are persistent native reports at Shanghai that the Empress Dowager is retiring to Cheng*tu-fu, the capital of Szu-chuan, the furthest inland province of China.
A LETTER OF PROTEST.
Major-General Chaffee, commanding the United States troops in China. wrote to Field-Marshal Count von Waldersee complaining of his action in removing the astronomical instruments erected by the early Jesuit missionaries on the walls of Pekin. The letter was returned to General Chaffee, owing to its tone.
