Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DEC. 8, 1900. The Tiber.
A cablegram mentions that " a thousand feet of a great embankment on the river Tiber has collapsed owing to the Hoods " and possibly owing to want of attention. The Tiber which flows through Koine rises in the Tuscan Apennines, and is further augmented by turbid mountain torrents, which has occasioned it to frequent and sudden overflowings. The character of the river is the same as in the days of old when Horace describGcl it as being discoloured with yellow mud. The river has been the cause of much anxiety to the Italian government and a great improvement has been made in straightening and embankit, which has deepened it, and thus secured the lower part of the city from inundation. The municipality had great schemes for improving the city and further dealing with the river, by which they hoped to make the city a port. However, like many other big schemes, it fell through owing to the municipality bsing practically bankrupt, and this will probably be found to be the cause of a part of the embankment having collapsed.
