The English Ganeral Electior.
The Government victory at the recent English gen ;a: election is not so ovi rwlielmhu 1 v. t'je cablegrams appeared to represent, as the following figures show. At the 1895 election the Govwnment majority was 152, wherein ni> the last election the majority is 132. It is well to bear in mind, however, that the majority of 152 in 1895 had been reduced at the date of dissolution of Parliament to 128, so that the net gain to the Government is on y two seats, counting on a division four votes. At the dissolution the relative strength of parties was as follows : - Conservatives 332, Liberal Unionists 67, making a total of 399; Liberals 189, and Nationalists 82, making a total of 271, thus making the 128 majority above mentioned. The present relative strength of pa-ties is as follows : Conservatives (332), Liberal Unionists (09) 401 ; Liberals (187), Nationalists (82) 2G9 The only alteration in the relative strength of parties effected by the
General Elective: ' ""^ +^ Liberal Unionists > -_.i a division 4. Ti*io b won from tho Liberals whose si agth has been reduced from 189 to 187.
