A Resident Doctor.

The meeting called last night by His Worship the Mayor to consider what steps should be taken to obtain a resident doctor for Foxton was held last night in the Victoria Hall. About twenty townspeople attended, and the matter was thoroughly discussed, a general opinion prevailing that the need of a reliable medical man for the town was most urgent. 1 The Mayor said he would have liked to have seen a more representative meeting, and thought the guarantee fund should amount to £200, apart from what the Forester's Lodge was likely to contribute, which would mean another £50 or £60 a year. Several others took part in the discussion, and it was deemed advisable that the amount as suggested by the Mayor was necessary, so that a good man could be procured. It was proposed by Mr G. Gray, seconded by Mr Hennessy, That a committee be formed to make the necessary arrangements and employ a canvasser to thoroughly canvass the district for an annual guarantee fund for a resident doctor. Carried. Proposed by Mr H. Baker, seconded by Mr Hennessy, That the canvasser on going round for subscriptions ascertain under what terms they desired a doctor to be engaged. Carried. A resolution proposed by Mr Newth, seconded by Mr Caverhill, That any money guaranteed by subscribers be deducted from fees was lost. The following were proposed as a committee with power to add to their number:— His Worship the Mayor, Rev. Mr Leach, and Messrs Hennessy, Caverhill, Geo. Gray, W. Cook, G. THVes, A.#nd H. Baker. *This concluded the general meeting, md the committee met immediately,

when Mr Geo. Stiles was appointed secretary, and Mr F. H. Cook canvasser. It was decided that the canvasser should take up his duties at once, and to make his report at a meeting to be held on Monday, 3rd December.
