The Transvaal.
OPERATIONS IN THE WEST. General Abel Erasmus with 2000 men, 12,000 cattle and 1000 waggons is at Olifant's River, in the Middleburg district. He is in possession of £150,000, and is paying the burghers five shillings a day. The Boer commandoes in the northern Transvaal are treaking south in the direction of the high veldt around Ermelo, about 55 miles southeast of Middleburg. They have a quantity of cattle with them. A strong Boer force attacked a British convoy at Vryheid, but was badly repulsed. DE LA REV. General De la Rey is in command of a thousand Boers between Vryburg and Fourteen Streams, on the railway line from Kimberley to Mafeking. WHOLESALE DEPORTATION. It is reported from Durban that Lord Kitchener intends to deport the I bulk of the civilian burghers as they hamper the British operations,
MR KRUGER AND HIS FRIENDS. The Mayor of Toulon has announced that he is officially joining in the welcome to ex- President Kruger on his arrival at Marseilles. Dr Leyds and Mr Michael Dayitt are at Marseilles, awaiting the arrival of Mr Kruger. TRANSMISSION OF TELEGRAMS. Permission has been granted by the "^ authorities, with certain limitations, for private messages to be sent to the Transvaal and Orange River Colony. A NEW REPUBLIC. General Christian Botha has formed a Republic at Roosenkal, in the eastern Transvaal, westward at Lydenburg. KLERKSDORP RECAPTURED. Major-General Barton and Colonel Douglas's columns have reoccupied Klerksdorp, and iooo miles south-west of Johannesburg, and the terminus of a branch railway from the latter city. Colonel Douglas's troops captured a large quantity of cattle, sheep and supplies. LORD KITCHENER. Lord Kitchener has returned from Natal to Standerton. He is sending the families of Transvaalers serving on commando to Natal. SNIPING IN PRETORIA. Sniping is persistent in many places, and takes place occasianally in the streets of Pretoria. A PLUCKY COLONIAL. A Reuter message states that Captain Harvey P. T. Finlayson, of Adelaide, who commands a detachment of Cape Mounted Police stationed at M odder river, relieved a ■feft^Di%tedetrtftfrrngTke"ra«& — fighting at Jacobsdal. With four men and without waitiug for laggards on foot, Captain Finlaysoa galloped into the town, experiencing in the square rifle fire from four sides. He chased a number of fugitive horse- . men, then returned and arrested the snipers. USE OF EXPLOSIVE BULLETS. The horrible nature of the wounds caused by explosive bullets, which are iv constant use by the Boers, is causing a demand for retaliation. EXECUTION OF A RENEGADE. An Italian who has been fighting with the Boers, and on being taken prisoner had sworn neutrality, has been sentenced to be hanged at Johannesburg for killing two members of Compton's Horse, who were garrisoning a farmhouse. MISCELLANEOUS. Sir Redvers and Lady Buller are visiting the Queen at Windsor. It is reported from Capetown that the Caledonian Society of South Africa is raising a corps of 300" mounted Scotsmen.
