ATTACK ON A CONVOY. The Boers attacked a convoy of women journeying from Bethlehem to H arris mith. ILLNESS OF LORD ROBERTS'S DAUGHTER. Lord Roberts remains at Johannesburg for some weeks yet, owing to the illness of his daughter, who is suffering from enteric. She is now closed in ice-packs with a view to reducing the fever, News has been received that Miss Roberts, who is suffering from enteric fever at Johannesburg, is progressing favourably. A CAPTURED GUN. Field-Marshal Lord Roberts has cabled that the New South Wales Mounted Infantry are bringing to Sydney a Krupp gun which they had captured. It was mainly owing to their dash, says Lord Roberts, that the regiment to which they were attached captured so many guns. AN IMPORTANT CAPTURE. Colonel Douglas has captured Ventersdorp, about thirty miles northwest on Potchefstroom, in the Western Transvaal, a place that has latterly been the enemy's supply base. Twenty-one prisoners and a number of cattle were captured: The New South Wales Bushmen and the New Zealanders did splendid work. MISHAP TO A PATROL. A police patrol at Pietersburg fought one hundred Boers for some hours until. their ammunition was exhausted. Seven were captured, stripped of their rifles and valuables, and released. DISTRIBUTION OF GIFTS. A hundred tons of gifts to soldiers have accumulated at Pretoria, remaining undelivered by the War Office, on account of the peregrimations of the troops. The bulk of the other presents, sent by post office have been delivered. FIGHTING SOUTH OF KIMBERLEY. Major-General Settle, who recently left Kimberley, heavily engaged the Boers to the southward with success. Many prisoners were taken. WAR MEDALS. The Government has ordered 150,- j 000 silver war medals in Birmingham. There is a portrait of the Queen on the obverse, and a figure of Peace offering a laurel wreath to the British and colonial army on the reverse. MR KRUGER'S TOUR. Dr Leyds has informed the Governments of France, Belguim and Hoilaud that Mr Kruger only claims the honour accorded to an official travelling incognito. Dr Leyds states that Mr Kruger has saved a portion of the Transvaal treasure, amounting to £400,000. He also says the ex-President intends to publish State documents compromising others. A VICTORIA CROSS HERO. Private J. H. Bisbee, of the Tasmanian Bushmen, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing a wounded officer under fire at Warm Baths, north of Pretoria. JOU BERT'S ADVICE REJECTED. The ex Landrost of a leading Transvaal town, now a prisoner at Durban,

is reported to have stated that after the battle of Spoinkop, the late General Joubert, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal army, reported that the war was hopeless and advised peace being sued for. President Kruger, however, refused to act on the general's advice. The Landrost admits that a conspiracy to oust the British existed, and says that many young Boers were specially trained in Europe as military engineers in readiness tor war. BOER IRRECONCILABLES. The Boers who are now fighting are sworn to regain their independence or die.
