Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOV. 10, 1900. Wanted— An Athletic Club.
» Yesterday's sports at the Victoria Park have proved, as other similar meetings have done, that the public are willing to support such gatherings, and that there are enough ! young men in tho, district desirous of i taking part in them. No one can
desire anything better than that our young men should interest themselves in healthy and manly games, but it is abundantly evident that some more stable and better equipped Society should have the conduct of them, and have a little more practise in working them. Those gentlemen who did a lot of hard work yesterday to secure the sport for the public and competitors did a great service, but they were handicapped by having no rules to work under. It was evident too that they require a better organised staff of officers to keep the track clear and quieten exciteable persons. We should like to see, now interest has been re-awakened in Athletic Sports a new club Organised, to which a fair subscription should be charged, so that meetings could be built up like the Racing Club's meetings have been. The Club could be put in more firm possession of the park for the day, and could frame rules to enable the management to keep order both on the part of spectators and compete tors, and by be^tg a proper club they would be recognised by other clubs and thus foul running of any description could be suitably and promptly punished by disqualification. We trust the promoters of yesterday's meeting wi 1 take the matter up, when some good sports might be arranged for St. Patrick's Day.
