Confessions of an Opium Eater.

L.aior« + Terrenes Kelly, sa, a shipping clerk at Liverpool, recently died from an overdose of opium. The Coroner read a letter from deceased. He stated that he had taken 50 to 60 grains of opium daily for 15 years. Having determined to commit suicide he tried half an ounce of laudanum, then one ounce, then one-eighth of an ounce of opium itself, then a quarter of an ounce, and at last three-eighths of an ounce, but all without effect, " and this time I intend to take that which ought to finish me, when six or eight grains are considered enough to kill any ordinary Christian." After describing the effect of opium on the system, the sensation of which Kelly says is " glorious," he states, " During the 15 years I took it, or say from 30 to 40 years of age, I found the brain as well as the heart quickened in action. Now my brain will not receive any impression, and is quite soft, and I have no more thinking faculty than a boy of ten years, and have forgotten almost all I ever kuew."
