At Birmingham the following message from the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain to the nation was displayed upon a screen illuminated by limelight on which the results of th« polling were shown : — " Patriotism before politics I May the union between the colonies and the Motherland now cemented by their blood be ever maintained ! "
Speaking in the country, Mr Chamberlain declared that never had an issue of more vital importance to the future prosperity and existence of the nation been before the electors than at present. He added that the aid given by the colonies must be reciprocated whenever they were insulted or oppressed.
A feature of the elections is the Violent and scurrilous attacks .made upon Mr Chamberlain by Mr Labouchere, Sir William Haccout, Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman, Mr A. Birrel. Q.C. (chaiiman of the Liberal Publication Committee), and other leaders.
The " Spectator " says it is monstrously unfair to represent Mr Chamberlain as the Government's evil genius. Other papers also denounce ifee malignity of the attacks.
