It is officially announced that Lord Roberts has succeeded Lord Wolseley as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. The newspapers commenting upon the appointment, declare that the nation will hail this birthday gift to the Field-Marshal with expression of confidence and satisfaction, and the whole army with a sense of delight. There are indication that Lord Kitchener will assist Lord Roberts in the reorganisation of the army. A FATAL EXPLOSION. Two Gordon Highlanders were killed and eighteen wounded while exploding Boer ammunition at Komati Poort. THE BOERS' MERCENARIES. It transpired that the Boer Executive paid the passages of 400 mercenaries to South Atrica. Thirty shillings was paid to each man at the time of sailing, and £8 ros on landing. BADEN-POWELL. Major-General Baden- Bo well it at I Pretoria, in command of twelve i thousand Transvaal and . Orange River Colony Police. GUARDS RETURNING HOME. The Grenadier Guards have left Komati Poort, on their return home. They will be followed by the Coldstreams.
