The Duke of York.
-4, .. On Lord Salisbury's recommendation, the Queen has been pleased to assent to the Duke and Duchess of York visiting Australasia in the spring of 1901. Thu Duke will be commissioned to open the Federal Parliament. Her Majesty, while shrinking from - the long parting from her grandson, **■ recognises the ;,'•■ cat ness of the occa- "*- sion of securing Federal Union, and desires to give a special proof of her interest in all concerning the welfare of her Australian subjects. It is also the wish of Her Majesty to signify her sense of the loyalty and devotion which prompted the spontaneous aid so liberally offered by all the colonies in the South African War, and the splendid gallantry of the troops. * The assent to the visit has been given on the assumption that the date of departure and circumstances generally, will be as favourable as at present, and that there will be no national interests calling for the Duke of York's presence in England.
