London.
" The Times " says that the Duke and Duchess of York will, in voyaging to Australia, use tbe new Royal yacht Victoria and Albert, which will be escorted by cruisers. A noticeable fact in connection with the approaching elections is that their are 189 constituencies in the United Kingdom without Liberal candidates. Nearly fifty Liberal members are urging the Earl of Rosebery, who was head of the last Liberal Ministry, to make a pronouncement of political affairs, promising to support his Imperial ideas. Mr Herbert Gladstone, speaking at Leeds, said the Liberals cannot expect a majority at the coining elections. It was therefore better to let Home Rule asleep awhile. There was now, he added, a wide divergence of opinion with reference to the policy of the Government in annexing the South African Republics. The Right Hon J. Chamberlain (Secret a: y of State fut the Colonies) in a brief letter, says the principal issues of the elections will be the
merits of the war, and the nature of the settlement required to prevent a recurrence of danger to South Africa, and to the prestige of the Empire.
