Manawatu County Council.
The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Present— Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), McLennan, Masters, F. Robinson, A. Strang, and Clark. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From T. H. Reed, Glen Oroua, complaining of lost goods left at Whale's Line.— lt was decided to make a locker at this station. From Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating in regard to the notice of the Crown Lands ranger posted in Ranj gitikei river bed, that it was done in compliance with a complaint made by one Job Vile, and was not in any way intended to interfere with the rights and privileges of the Council to obtain shingle. EXTENSION OF TRAMWAY. A letter was read from James C. Fulton, Engineer, with plans and specifications and estimates for the extension of the Sandon -Carnarvon tramway to the Rangitikei river, following the roadway at a total cost of £5694, exclusive of cost of land. It was resolved that the necessary steps be taken under The Treasury Act to construct the tramway from Sanson to the Terrace at the Rangitikei river, in accordance with the plans and description as prepared by Mr Fulton. THE TRAMWAY. Tramway Manager reporting that receipts last month amounted to £109 4s 8d and expenses £90 12s, this being the first credit shown for August since 1896. The cost of the pig yards* at Rongotea was £18 ss. and b% under-
stood that the company for whose ' convenience the yards were built was now carting pigs to Longburn. FINANCE. The chairman said the receipts for the current six months would exceed the expenditure which was encouraging in view of the proposed extension of tramway. The Treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £33 13s gd in the Awahou riding, the other ridings having a total debit balance of £1492 18s sd. WIROKINO BRIEGB. Cr Strang reported that he had at- j tended as a member of the deputation to the Minister of Lands, to request j Government to undertake the whole cost of Wirokino bridge. Mr Davies laid the matter before the Minister, who promised to place the request before Cabinet, and gave the deputation to understand that Government would probably pay three-fourths of the cost. RESOLUTIONS. It was decided to pay the Sandon Small Bird Club the usual subsidy of £10 to assist in purchasing poisoned grain. It was resolved that tenders be called for forming about 40 chains continuation of Rosina Line, to the river. That tenders be invited for the right of working the Shannon ferry and collecting tolls thereat, for a period of X2 months. A resolution was passed, striking a special rate of gd in the pound, in Rongotea special rating area to pay interest on a loan of £400 to be borrowed for street formation. Cr McLennan said he had been informed that some roadmen were in the habit of going and returning from work in the Council time. The Clerk was directed to notify all workmen to be at work from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. unless under exceptional circumstances. It was resolved that tenders be called for lowering clay cuttings on Oroua Bridge-Carnarvon road. — Advocate.
