Manawatu Licensing Bench.
The quarterly meeting of the above was held at Marton on Saturday. Present— Mr A. Greenfield, S.M., (chairman), Messrs R. K. Simpson, D. Coughlin, Wood, Ransom, McHardie. Police reports on various hotels in the district were favorable. MANAWATU HOTEL, FOXTON. Mr Cohen for the licensee, Mr T. Wanklyn submitted plans for proposed new structure, the old one having been' burnt down. These were approved of by the committee subject to the addition of a balcony and fire escapes. Instructed by Messrs Skerrett and Wylie (of Wellington) Mr Cohen applied for an informal expression of j opinion from members of committee as to whether they would grant a license for above hotel if it were b_ilt on a j new site, namely, the corner of Clyde i and Main streets. Mr Innes appeared ! and objected to such expression of i opinion being given because the court i had received no formal application. The committee resolved to give an expression of opinion on the point, and ; after hearing Messrs Innes and Lyon j and Mr Cohen in reply, decided that j they would not be likely to grant such an application on the ground that the proposed new structure would be in j the immediate vicinity of the Presbyterian Church. — Advocate. {
