PUNISHING FREE STATERSt Lord Roberts has burned thirty Free State farms and fined fifty others one-eighth the value of the property as a punishment for railway raids. General Bethune has occupied Vrede, capturing quantities of cattle, sheep and ammunition. Commandant Botha has ordered that Mauser rifles be returned to headquarters until further ammunition is available. In the meantime the Boers will use Martini rifles. OFFICERS ESCAPE. While some captured British officers were being transferred to Barberton, 10 escaped, including Lieut. Rundle ot the 6th Dragoon Guards, late of New South Wales.
