Huge Defalcations.
» A sensation was created at Ashburton on Saturday afternoon by the reported defalcations of E. Stephens, manager of the Ashburton Permanent Building Society. He has been hitherto a highly respected citizen. Duplicate receipt books were adopted by •him, and the system has been carried on tor years. The various estimates of the deficiency amount from £4000 to £5000. It is understood every information is being given to the directors,' and the losses will not affect the society seriously.
