Mr S. Grier has been elected presi dent of the Manawatu Racing Club.
Messrs Walsh and Howan aftrr some disappointments have got their steam-engine in good-going order. The engine is erected to drive a sausage machine for which delicacies the firm has a large demand, too much for man-power to supply. .

One of the newest things in the way of drafting yards in an ingenious arrangement now in use at Bushy Creek, W. Australia. This yard is of circular formation, and is so arranged that ' the moving sheep have others beside them all the way, thus giving them an impression that they are going to join their mates, and thereby rendering the task of drafting a comparatively easy one. Another feature of this yard is that there are no projections, and rails and posts presenting a perfectly flat surface, so that there is nothing to catch the sheep's wool, and no sharp edges against which they might be pressed to their hurt.

Many of the schemes in this direction are no less ingenious than generous, as, for example, Reservists at the front who are customers of the Hackney Furnishing Company, are not called upon to pay on their contracts any instalments hiring the continuation of the war; while should any be so unfortunate as to lose their lives in battle or by disease, whatever balance is due is given to their families. In this way the company has already disbursed among Reservists' families the large sum of £5.000.
