Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1900 The Governor's Visit.

It ia well known that on Monday next His Excellency Lord Eanfurly will pay a visit to this town in connection with the opening of the Wirokino Bridge. The pleasant and prompt manner with which His Excellency acceded to the request made to him to visit us on this occasion has made his action all the more to be fully appreciated, and we can do this best by turning out in our thousands to greet him with a right royal | welcome, to which he is entitled as the representative of Our Most Gracious Sovereign. Many of us who " live the life removed " are apt to overlook the importance of attention to these imperative duties as citizens, and we would therefore ask all to ponder upon the subject and decide to make an effort to make our celebration as hearty, as enthusiastic, and as numerous in attendance as we can. We all appreciate the value of the bridge as it is a removal to the bar our trade has suffered, and one and all can rejoice thai the stigma of the old-fashioned punt has been removed from the entrance to our town. The bridge is one more step in the path of progress, which we trust will be such aa to whet our appetites for more, and will coalesce our forces to attain more. The bridge is a happy and practical embodiment of what can be obtained by push and working together and should be used as a watch-word for more work in the like direction. We are not a community of Boers who desire to retain Foxton for the residents only, but are just as much a sound English settlement as there is in the ' colony, who are j anxious to visit, and be visited by pur neighbours, and every conyeni-

ence we can obtain in that direction should be the object and work of our representatives. Thus the celebration of the opening of the Wirokino Bridge has a far wider meaning than the actual completion of a piece of work, and for the reasons it is so, so should the celebration of its completion be general and warm. The luncheon at the hall is open to ladies as well as gentlemen, and the committee hope that gentlemen will escort their wives, sisters, sweethearts as well as " their cousins and their aunts," as such a gay gathering would be a great compliment, as great as it is in our power to pay, to His Excellency the Governor, the Queen's Representative.
