Slaughtering and Inspection.
Under the above title the Hon. Mr Duncan is introducing a Bill dealing with th« meat supply of the colony. If it becomes law it will probably entail some cost on butchers, but it will secure more care being given to the cleanliness of the surroundings of slaughterhouses. In boroughs of over aooo inhabitants abattoirs have to be erected by the governing body, but in other cases butchers have to obtain a license from the Secretary for Agriculture at Wellington and show that the requirements of the Act have been duly complied with and that the situation of the slaughterhouse is not objectionable, and that its construction, equipment, and accommodation are in all respects sufficient, and as in the case of local bodies, plans have to be submitted. It is provided that every slanghtering-place, saleyard, conveyance, or other place where stock are v confined, shall be kept efficiently lighted, ventilated, cleansed, drained, and provided with a sufficient water-supply i and no offal, filth, or refuse shall be allowed to remain therein for more than 24 hours, and pigs shall not be allowed to wander, or to £c kept, housed or penned within fifty yards of any slaughtering place. As we are accustomed in this colony the Bill abounds in fees and fines, but at the same time it appears to be an attempt to secure some cleanliness in the preparation of meat for the public. -
