Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 1900. " Ring the Bell, Watchman."
We shall not be very far out in ! asserting that in every town and j every village in this colony, except in the Borough of Foxton, steps have been taken to celebrate the conclusion of the war in South Africa. It will also have been noticed that the Mayors of other boroughs have been fully aware that to secure a successful celebration the hearty co-opera-tion of the public is needed, and their attendance has been invited to all meetings convened to consider the proposals. The Mayor of Foxton appears to be of the opinion that he has done all that is necessary when he laid the memorandum from the government before the Councillors. We have not heard of their having even discussed the proposal, and though we fear the date of such a celebration is not very near, it is evident by the news from the seat of war, that it is getting nearer, and as the government are of the opinion that the time is nigh, it surely should be the Mayor's duty to convene a public meeting without further delay The loyal settlers of the district intend to have a celebration and ' simply have not moved in the matter in deference to the position the Mayor holds, but if he ignores his duty there are others who will soon take i prompt action and work without the ' Mayor's leadership.
