FOXTON v. HOROWHENUA. The Foxton footballers travelled to Levin on Saturday to meet the Horowhenuas, the leading team for the Cup. Furrie won the toss and decided to defend the western goal, with a very slight breeze behind the
team. After the kick off Foxton, as they generally do, rushed the ball into their opponent's quarters where they had the best of the forward play that followed. Gradually, however, they were worked back, and just inBide Foxton's 25's the Horowhenuas were awarded a free kick, from which Hitchings kicked a beautiful goal. Horowhenua 8, Foxton nil. After the kick off play was very even for some time, when after some fast following along the line by the Horowhenua forwards the play was taken " into Foxton's quarters. From a scrum near the line Denniston secured possession and transferred to Hitchings, who, after a dodgy run of a few yards scored for Horowhenua Winiata placed a splendid goal. Horowhenua 8, Foxton nil. The Foxton boys now began to wake up and gave the others a warm time. The play was kept in Horowhenua's A ' quarters for. some time, when from loose play, Sullivan, who was playing a grand game, went over the line for Foxton, but the try was disallowed as he went out of touch-in-goal. Foxton, however, were not to be denied and forced their opponents once or twice, when from a throw Out near the line Munroe dropped over and scored first blood for Foxton -amidst great applause. Furrie made a poor attempt at goal, and the spell shortly after ended. Horowhenua 8, Foxton 8. In the second spell it was easily seen that Foxton were having all the best of the game and the worst of the lock. Horowhenua was kept busily defending for some time, when from • Borum near the corner, Hunter cleverly obtained possession and, dodging round the blind side of the •ocoxn, scored the second, try for foxton, right at the corner. Furrie made a beautiful attempt at goal, the ball landing right on top of the orossb*r and falling back into play. Luck wag clearly against Foxton, as the goal would have scored two extra points, thereby making the game a draw. This did not discourage the Foxton boys who went at it with redoubled vigour. Now and again Horowhenua would get near the Foxton quarters but the visiting forwards, who are a splendid lot, graduually took them back to the centre, where the game hung for some time. *From a miss-kick by Laing Foxton was forced, and ;she whistle shortly afterwards sounded leaving Horowhenua winners by 1 goal from a try and a free kick to 2 tries — in all 8 points to 6. Mr Hankins refereed in an impartial manner. y Baukawa defeated Manukau at Otaki on Saturday by 21 points to 8. Manukau had a weak team. Levin defeated Wanderers at Levin by 19' points to nil.
