Parliament was opened by Commission on Thursday afternoon, and the House then met and elected Sir Maurice O'Rorke Speaker. Messrs P. Hennessy & Co. presented us with a sample of the potatoes they are now advertising, and we can safely assert they are the best in the local market. The tuber is clean and j smooth, and when properly boiled are floury and white. The firm should have little difficulty in quitting the stocks they hold. Mr Fraser, who brought the Himitangi out from England, and has since acted as mate, left that steamer on Thursday, and intends going into a business apart from the sea at either Foxton or Picton. His position has been filled by Mr Jamieson, late of the Union Company, who last went to Sydney as mate of the Brunner. — N.Z. Times. While repairs were being effected to some telephone lines in Brisbane on i Thursday, one ot the wires fell across an electric tram wire, and received the powerful current used for traction pur« poses. One man who was working on a telephone pole was thrown to the ground and met with serious injuries. Several miles of telephone wire throughout the city were fused by the current, which also set fire to a hotel. The fire was, however, extinguished, with but small damage. Narrow, escapes were experienced by several persons who were about to use their telephones. A case of somewhat unusual nature will be beard at the Otaki Court at an early date, Mr Hull, Stock Inspector, having laid an information against a Horowhenua settler, charging him with cropping off more than a quarter of hi? sheep's ears. The maximum fine in a case of this description is £10 per head and the minimum 2s per head. The London Daily Mail says:— "The medal for the present South African campaign will be the most, expensive and the most ornate issued by the War Office in recent years. The medal proper is a five pointed silver with a gold centre, surrounded by a ring of bronze on which the words " South Africa " appear in raised letters. In the centre of all is a miniature of the Queen. The medal is of the same size as the Khedival medal of 1881. The ribbon has five stripes ; one of khaki in the centre, two of white, and one each of red and blue. A bar will probably be granted for each important engagement." The acceptance by Mr Rose-Innes of the Attorney-Generalship in the new Ministry guarantees Sir Gordon Sprigg the support of Mr Schreiner, toe exPremier, 'who has been completely divorced from Mr Hofmeyr and the Afrikander Bond, through the action of the recent Bond Congress in passing wild resolutions favouring the maintenance of the Boer Republics' independence and the tfpid of martial law. Mr Sicely, acting for Mr J. E. Fulton, C.E., has just completed the survey of the proposed tramway extension from Sandon to the Rangitikei river, just below the old bridge site. The distance is about 3$ miles. The route chosen starts from the present station round the corner near tbe Junction Hotel, runs along the north side of the road to opposite the school, it then crosses to tbe other side till close to Mr J. A miraculous escape from a fatal accident occurred at Mr Thompson's flaxmill, «ear FeUding, on Tuesday afternoon. Mr G. Lowe, the manager, was passing under the shaft when be was caught by his clothes, and after being whirled round, was thrown some distance away. The clothing was torn off the unfortunate young man's back, in fact only the wristbands of his shirt remaining. Medical aid was obtained from Feilding when it was found that beyond a severe bruising and shaking, no bones were broken. Mr Lowe was afterwards taken to Palmerston, and under Dr Satchell's care is progressing satisfactorily. Mr E. Among the many interesting curios brought from the South Sea Islands by the Tutanekai was a native canoe from Rarotonga, with outrigger and paddles complete. The craft is an object lesson in what can be done by human hands without the aid of modern appliances, for not even a nail or tack is used in its construction, tbe hull having been skilfully hollowed out of the trunk of a tree, and anything in the way of a fastening is done with a coarse native twine. Many other mementos of the trip, in the shape of native maps, ornaments, and various kinds of coral were brought back, as well as a large quantity of island fruit. We much regret to learn that the decision in tbe case of Guard Morton has been tbat of dismissal. Mr Morton has been 20 years in tbe railway service. He has always been a conscientious,' civil and most obliging public servant.
