The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Present—Crs J. G. Wil son (chairman), F. Robinson, J. Masters, J. R. McLennan, A. Strang, P. Clark, H. Hammond. Correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From Colin McKenzie, offering 3s a ton for best of flax. From Crown Lands Commissioner, asking that plan of closed road in Ohakea estate be signed by Chairman — To be signed when an area for gravel reserve has been vested in Council e*qual to road to be closed. From S. Knight and others, calling attention to the bad state of Miller's Line. — The Overseer said the state of the road was mostly due to water from J. Sanson's artesian well standing high in Mr Couper's drain, which had not been cleaned for two years. — Mr Sanson to be requested to stop water, and
Mr Green away to have drain cleared out preparatory to required repair* being done. From F. Purnell, inspector, of slaughterhouses, reporting all the slaughterhouses were practically withon drainage, and in several cases pigs -vere fed on offal close to the slaughterhouse. Sotne of the owners had abated the nuisance this had caused after being notified. 4 The report was approved, and it was decided to take into consideration next meeting some regulations suggested for the improvement of the surroundings of sorae-of the slaughterhouses. The estimates of receipts and expenditure were read. The chairman said there was every probability that the rates would have o be raised next year, if not this. There would be the interest on the vVirokino and Bulls bridges to pay *xt year, and owing to increase t>f frame on the roads partly caused by ' n.lk carts, the cost of maintenance was constantly increasing. By putting •he tramline through, the cost of metal or maintenance would be materially ?ened. .•'•;■. It was resolved to strike a general rate. . The overseer, in his report, referred to the damage done to the main drain road by Mr Buckman carting, on it. The overseer was directed to a» that ' Mr Buckman did not carry more than 30 cwt. on two wheels. No tenders were opened, it having been decided, owing to the wet state of the road where work had to be dona, to invite tenders later in the year. It was resolved that a special meeting of the Council be held on Thursday, sth July, 1900, at 2 p.m., for the purpose of amending by-law regulating heavy traffic, and passing monthly accounts;— Advocate, fv;
