Fire.

MANAWATU HOTEL DESTROYED. Last night a fire broke out in the MAriawatu Hotel which caused' its total destruction. It is supposed that the fire priginated in the kitchen and owing to the wind blew right ' along the passage, as those first at J the fire noticed both the back and front of the building on fire at the one time. At 8.15 p.m. a boarder in the house heard Mrs Wanklyn call out to the children to come out of the house as it was on fire. He ran upstairs to get his things and had a great trouble to get back as the fire burned so quickly. A man noticed, about 8 o'clock, some smoke rising along the ridge of the roof above the kitchen. He went inside and told Mrs Wanklyn, who was upstairs on the main passage, that the house was on fire. Mrs Wanklyn on opening the door of room No. IS found the flames coming into the passage. The cook left the kitchen at seven - o'clock with a fire in the range and went down town, and had returned just before the fire broke out. We understand there were inaurancss on the building and furniture. So quick was the fire that nothing was saved, the residents getting away with only the clothes they wore Mr Wanklyn will be a heavy loser.
